Hoodless was named after an outspoken educator and one of the most influential women in Canadian history. The granddaughter of Irish immigrants from County Monoghan, Adelaide Hoodless was born in St George Ontario where she grew up without a father or a formal education beyond elementary school.
Hoodless was a mother to four children when tragedy struck in 1889. After 10 days of sickness from drinking impure milk, her infant son died at the age of 14 months. Adelaide’s public life began as she devoted herself to ensuring that new mothers had the knowledge to prevent such deaths.
Relentless and resilient, Hoodless championed the value of women’s contributions in society and became venerated worldwide as an advocate of domestic reforms that advanced the education of rural women and the health of mothers and children. At a time when few women had the opportunity to gain an education, she broke down boundaries that defined their lives in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Sparking a worldwide movement, Hoodless founded the Women’s Institute, now an internationally organized society with 9 million members in 70+ countries. She co-founded the Victorian Order of Nurses, Canada’s largest not-for-profit home-care organization supporting more than 10,000 Canadians daily. Hoodless is also a co-founder of the YWCA in Canada, the National Council of Women, and three faculties of Household Science that still exist today.
The Government of Canada designated Adelaide Hoodless a Person of National Significance for her numerous and considerable contributions to the history of Canada. Three schools in Ontario bear her name. Her childhood home was declared a National Historic site and now operates as a museum and tribute to a “modest revolutionary” who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most prominent women in the Canada’s history.
About the sire
Hoodless was sired by Kentucky-bred Frac Daddy, a multiple graded stakes winner who earned $701,236 in 20 starts (5-7-0) between 2012 and 2015. He won or placed in graded stakes races on all three surfaces: dirt, turf and synthetic. As a 2-year old (2YO), Frac Daddy won the Churchill Maiden Special by 9 3 ⁄4 lengths in his second start. As a 3YO, he was a contender in the Kentucky Derby and came second in the $1M G1 Arkansas Derby. His 4YO campaign brought wins at both the G3 Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland and Woodbine’s Eclipse Stakes (G2) by widening margins.
Post retirement and by January 2024, Frac Daddy had sired five crops of racing age, 137 foals, 62 starters, and 38 winners of 76 races with progeny earnings of more than $2.8 million. He is a Top 10 leading sire in Canada and the country’s leading active sire of two-year-olds by progeny earnings.
Frac Daddy’s sire, Scat Daddy, was a Kentucky-bred millionaire earner who retired with a record of 5-1-1 in nine starts. He has sired 95 stakes winners including Mendelssohn, who sold for $3 million as a yearling and won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
About the dam
Hoodless is the second foal out of dam Rockyroadto Dublin who was sired by Kentucky-bred Giant Gizmo, a multiple graded stakes winner who retired as a 4YO with a record of 6-1-1 and $508,685 in purses won from 11 starts. In his 3YO and final 4YO campaigns, Giant Gizmo raced 9 times at Saratoga, Belmot, Santa Anita, Churchill Downs, and Lone Star. His eSpeed figures in those races ranged between 96 and 122 and he hit triple digits in six of those nine outings while winning four of his final five races.
