Sept 29, 2024 – In her career debut at Woodbine in race 6 last Saturday, Canuck Racing Club’s unveiled their latest starter, two-year-old BrenGunGirl, sired by Point of Entry out of Silent Sister.
Overcoming a bad draw from the outside gate, jockey Rafael Hernandez found himself caught on the outside of the pack and forced to come back in from way wide. Unable to get to the rail without slotting back or accelerating early in an already quick pace, he stayed outside and committed to running five deep in mid-pack down the backside. He asked BrenGunGirl to open up at the seven sixteenths pole and was game.
Passing rivals to edge ever closer to the leader, BrenGunGirl pressured frontrunner Ruthless Action and proved to be her only real threat through the turn. With the latter clinging to the lead inside about a furlong from the wire, Hernandez asked his talented filly for more and BrenGunGirl took off like a bullet. The eventual second place winner had no answer in the wake as Canuck Racing Club’s latest winner blew by to win with authority.
The club named named their filly after Canadian Veronica Foster who was known as “the Bren Gun Girl”. She was a cultural icon who worked on a production line in Toronto and inspired a million Canadian women to step up and work in manufacturing plants when the nation’s men fought in WWII. Canada’s Bren Gun Girl appeared in major newspapers worldwide and generated massive support for the war effort.
On the day, this filly was able to channel her namesake and proved that she was up for new challenges, all work ethic, and ready to fire.
