Dec 1, 2024 – Canuck Racing Club’s 2YO stakes winning colt Dewolf (Silent Name – Holy Cargo) matched up against the best Canadian sired thoroughbreds in the Coronation Futurity Stakes on Saturday. Bumped at the start, Dewolf was well positioned in the first turn when jockey Rafael Hernandez backed off the leaders to tuck his mount inside to stalk. Travelling outside the whole trip, Hernandez urged Dewolf to take a narrow lead in upper stretch in a duel with the leader. Things looked promising until Notorious Gangster – who had had great trip to that point – shifted outside for a late charge that delivered a two length win over Dewolf in second place. Dewolf finished his two-year-old campaign with an impressive record of 2-3-0 in six starts and the status of being both a stakes winner and graded stakes placed. His final four races resulted in a win captured in the Bull Page Stakes and consecutive second place finishes in the Cup & Saucer Stakes, the Grade 3 Grey Stakes, and the Coronation Futurity.

Dewolf was one of two entries by Canuck Racing Club in the Coronation Futurity as 2YO stablemate Conacher (Maximum Security – Tocco) took a massive step up in class into a $250,000 stakes race after his maiden win by 7 lengths in the $25,000 optional claiming category. Under jockey Sofia Vives, the gelding surged to the front of the pack post break and pushed the leader to ensure pace in the race. Remaining well positioned throughout the contest, Vives angled Conacher out five deep exiting the final turn but he didn’t have enough in the tank to threaten to the wire and missed finishing in the top five by a length. Given the step up in competition, Conacher delivered a solid effort that should serve him well in terms of both experience and confidence as he embarks on a his three-year-old campaign running distance races.

So ended a two stakes, three horse day for the Canuck Racing Club who also ran filly BrenGunGirl in the preceding race, the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes. The promising filly also wrapped up her rookie campaign as a stakes winner (South Ocean Stakes) with a record of 2-0-0 in three races.
