Behind the name

Blending folk, rock and country influences, the Skydiggers emerged from Toronto’s vibrant club scene back when the Queen Street West bar circuit was an incubator for young performers passionate about songwriting and rootsy playing.

In 1990, the band’s self-titled debut spawned three singles including the ballad “I Will Give You Everything”: a breakthrough track that earned heavy rotation on national radio and video channels. Subsequent hits like “A Penny More” and “What Do You See?” solidified the Skydigger’s place in Canadian music history.

Over the course of three decades, 19 albums/EPs, and countless miles on the road, the Juno Award-winning roots rockers built a songbook that rivals those of their Canadian peers along with a reputation for engaging performances that foster deep connections with audiences.

Still writing, performing and touring nationally today, the Skydiggers remain a cherished musical voice in Canada with haunting melodies and a distinct sound and spirit that never go out of style.

About the sire

Maxfield is a multiple graded stakes winner who only ran in stakes races after winning his maiden special weight debut at Churchill Downs. Never finishing off the board, he retired after 11 starts with a record of 8-2-1 and over $2 million in purse earnings. After his 2-year-old campaign, he registered 3-digit eSpeeds in all nine of his races, topping out at 117.

As a 2-year-old, Maxfield went 2-0, winning the 8.5-furlong G1 Breeders’ Futurity by five-and-a-half lengths. As a 3-year-old, he again went 2-0 winning the 8.5-furlong G3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs followed by the 8.5-furlong Tenacious Stakes at the Fair Grounds. In his final campaign as a 4-year-old, he took the 8.5-furlong G3 Mineshaft Stakes, the 8.5-furlong G2 Alysheba Stakes, the 9-furlong G2 Stephen Foster Stakes, and the 9-furlong G1 Clark Stakes, while placing second in the G1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, second in the 9-furlong G1 Woodward Stakes, and third in the 10-furlong G1 Santa Anita Handicap.

Retiring in 2022 to stand in Kentucky where his current stud fee is $40,000, Maxfield‘s first yearlings were sold in 2024, including a filly and a colt that were acquired for $1 million each at the Keeneland September Sale. At that event, seven other Maxfield progeny sold for $500,000 to $800,000, 15 sold for prices between $225,000 and $495,000, and 14 were bought for $100,000 to $220,000.

Maxfield was sired by Kentucky-bred Street Sense, the 2007 Kentucky Derby winner who went 6-4-2 in 13 starts to earn more than $4.3 million on the track. Street Sense was sired by Ireland’s Street Cry, a Dubai World Cup winner who raced 12 times, retiring with a record of 5-6-1 and more than $5 million in purse winnings.

Maxfield’s dam, Velvety, is by 2006 Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Colt and Preakness winner Bernardini and is a half-sister to both Grade I winner Sky Mesa and multiple stakes winner Golden Velvet. Velvety’s dam was G3 winner Caress (13-4-2 in 29 starts, earned $666,076) who was sired by G1 winner and 1985 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Storm Cat (4-3-0 in 8 starts, won $570,610 in purses).
