Nov 21, 2024 – Canuck Racing Club’s filly Pickford Sweet got her first career win with a dominant performance in a 1 1/16 mile contest at Woodbine on Thursday in race 1. Under young jockey Austin Adams, the heavily favoured 2-year-old filly accelerated away from rivals to win by 5.5 length. Acquired based on her long distance (two-turn) potential, this was the filly’s second race at 1 1/16 miles after coming a nose short of winning her previous attempt.

Edging back after the break, Pickford Sweet and Adams settled between rivals and stalked the top two into the first of two turns. The running order remained the same for much of the bout as the field slotted in behind pacesetter No Visor. When asked, Pickford Sweet inched closer between runners approaching the top of the second turn. Exiting it in the third spot, the duo straightened out three wide for the stretch drive. As Adams kicked her into a gear no other rival had, Pickford Sweet quickly opened up by the furlong marker. Under a hand ride, she rapidly opened up the gap for a dominant win.

Pickford Sweet is trained by King’s Plate and Breeders’ Cup winning trainer Kevin Attard. Also trained by Attard, first-time starter and second place finisher in race 1, Serenading Maya, also stalked the leading duo early and similarly edged closer while journeying around the far turn. When the time came to go however, she could not keep up with her more powerful stablemate late and was easily bested by Pickford Sweet giving the trainer a 1-2 finish.
