Behind the name

Crosby is named after Sidney Crosby: one of the best hockey players of all time and arguably the best of this century. Born in Halifax on 8/7/87, the Canadian is electrifying on open ice, devastatingly effective in the corners, uncheckable in motion, and unquestionably the greatest winner in hockey history: a difference-maker with a championship pedigree and the most enviable resume in hockey.

Now 37-years-old and in his 20th NHL season, Crosby is a ten-time all-star who remains one of the finest 200-feet player in the game, the long-time face of the league, and the heartbeat of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Deploying exceptional on-ice vision, passing, leadership, work ethic, and completeness of game, Sid the Kid quickly smashed “youngest player ever to” records. His legacy includes being the youngest player to win an IIHF World Championship scoring title and his NHL distinctions include being the youngest to record 100 points in a season (and to record two consecutive such seasons), first rookie to record 100 points and 100 penalty minutes in a season, youngest to record 200 career points, youngest player voted to the starting line-up in an All-Star Game, youngest player to be named to the first All-Star team, youngest winner of the Art Ross Trophy and Lester B. Pearson Award, youngest to lead the NHL playoffs in scoring, and the youngest captain to win the Stanley Cup.

After debuting in the NHL with a 102-point season during the 2005-06 season, Crosby led the NHL in scoring in his second season and became the only teenager to ever win a scoring title in any major North American sports league. That year he also won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s MVP and the Lester B. Pearson Award for most outstanding player as judged by his peers.  He started the 2007-08 season as a captain, led the Penguins to the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals, and brought them right back there the next year to win the Cup in seven games.

On the international stage, the exceptional Canadian won his first and second World Junior Championships playing for Team Canada at 16 and 17 years of age. At 18, he won the first of his two World Championships. Crosby’s first game of the 2025 4 Nations Face Off on February 12th marked the 26th time he donned a Team Canada jersey – and his 26th international win. In that game, #87 assisted on three of the four goals scored by the team he captained and his electrifying performance earned him player of the game honours. His 26-0 record will never be matched by another and he is certain to go down as the greatest player to ever represent his country.

Along with his three Stanley Cups and two Olympic gold medals, Crosby’s trophy haul over two decades of dominance includes the Art Ross (most points), Hart Memorial (team MVP), Mark Messier Leadership (superior leader in team and community), Maurice Richard (league leading goal scorer), Conn Smythe (playoff MVP), and Lou Marsh (Canadian athlete of the year) awards. This enviable collection is made even more impressive given that Crosby has won each of these awards twice.

A three-time winner of the Lionel Conacher Award for Canadian male athlete of the year, Sidney Crosby was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2022. Destined for the Hockey Hall of Fame, the humble superstar and pride of Canada will forever sit atop media, fan, and official lists as one of the greatest athletes to ever pull on a sweater and lace up skates.

About the sire

Sold for $300,000 as a yearling at the 2005 Keeneland September Sale, Street Boss is a record-breaking Kentucky-bred sprinter sired by champion sire of sires Street Cry whose progeny includes over 130 stakes-winners.

As a 3-year-old, Street Boss won his debut at Del Mar and hit triple digit eSpeeds in three of his four races. As a 4-year-old, Street Boss ran nine races, won six, finished second twice, and captured third in his last run in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Sprint.  His longest winning streak in 2008 was five consecutive races culminating in duel grade 1 victories in the Triple Bend and Bing Crosby Handicap.

Only finishing out of the money twice in his career, Street Boss retired with a record of 7-3-1 in 13 starts and $831,800 in purses. In 11 of his 13 races, he reached triple digit eSpeeds topping out at 117 and hitting 114 three times.

At the time we acquired Crosby, Street Boss had sired 13 crops of racing age and his progeny earnings stood at more than $150 million courtesy of 922 winners of 2,668 races and 76 stakes winners. Eight of the latter were G1 winners including Anamoe (a nine-time G1 champion), Cathryn Sophia, Pinstriped, and The Quarterback.
