Behind the name
A 14-time winner of the Canada Soccer Player of the Year award, Christine Sinclair is the top international scorer in both women and men’s football. Her world record 190 goals in 317 international games also makes her the world’s most-capped active international footballer and second-most all time. Comparatively, Cristiano Ronaldo, widely considered to be one of the greatest ever, holds the men’s world record with 117 goals in 191 international games for Portugal.
Sinclair has taken part in five World Cups and will appear in her sixth in Australia and New Zealand in 2023. Having competed in four Olympics, she is a gold medalist, two-time bronze medalist, CONCACAF champion, and was shortlisted for FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year seven times. Sinclair was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, awarded the Best FIFA Special Award, named Canada Soccer’s Player of the Decade, and was the first soccer player ever to win Canadian Athlete of the Year.
Clearly Canada’s best soccer player ever and one of the foremost women soccer players in history, Sinclair is personally responsible for about 35% of Canada’s total goals scored internationally since 2000 when she debuted with the senior national team at only 16 years of age.
“There are no wasted movements when Sinclair runs. She’s strong, intelligent, deceptively fast, and hits her top speed almost immediately. Her focus and clarity of purpose is off the charts.”
In Canada’s first game at the 2011 World Cup in Germany, Sinclair’s nose was broken by a defender’s elbow. She ignored the medical staff’s pleas to quit the game, pushed away hands trying to treat her, and just repeated that she wanted to play. “Her nose was basically on the side of her face,” recalls a teammate. “She didn’t cry. She didn’t whine. She just wanted to get back out there.” Against the advice of medical personnel, Sinclair went back on the field and scored against the #1-ranked team in the world.
Typically Canadian, Sinclair is calm, humble, and reserved off the pitch. She doesn’t act the part of a star player, doesn’t like talking about herself, and makes no demands for custom equipment or special treatment. On the field, she transforms into a fierce, fearless competitor who never wilts under pressure and knows no quit.
