Oct 2, 2024 – Anderson Farms is one of Canada’s biggest thoroughbred breeders and its President, Dave Anderson frequently partners with friend and lawyer Don Ferguson on broodmares. The two bred yearlings sired by Kentucky-bred multiple graded stakes winner Maxfield and recently sold one of their yearlings at the Keeneland September Sale September.

Of yearlings sired by Maxfield and auctioned at that sale, one filly and one colt sold for $1 million each, seven sold for $500,000 to $800,000, fifteen sold for prices between $225,000 and $495,000, 14 were bought for $100,000 to $220,000, and the hammer fell on eight winning bids between $60,000 and $85,000. The average sales price of all Maxfield yearlings sold at the Keeneland September Sale sale was $231,000.

Anderson and Ferguson bred another Maxfield filly that they did not opt to sell at the sale, one admired by top agent Donato Lanni. Given that Lanni is managing partner of Canuck Racing Club and both Anderson and Ferguson are club members, it made perfect sense to partner on the filly. She will be trained by King’s Plate winning trainer Kevin Attard to race next year at Woodbine in Canuck colours.

Maxfield retired after 11 starts with a record of 8-2-1 and over $2 million in purse earnings. As a 2YO, he won the 8.5-furlong G1 Breeders’ Futurity by five-and-a-half lengths. As a 3YO, he won the 8.5-furlong G3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs. In his 4YO campaign, he took the 9-furlong G1 Clark Stakes, the 8.5-furlong G2 Alysheba Stakes, and the 8.5-furlong G2 Stephen Foster Stakes while placing second in the G1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga and third in the 10-furlong G1 Santa Anita Handicap.

Retiring in 2022 to stand in Kentucky for his current stud fee of $35,000, Maxfield’s first yearlings were sold in 2024.

The filly’s mare, Fragrance, was sired by Oasis Dream (9 starts 4-2-1, $694,000 USD in purses won) out of Bahamadam (GB), by Bahamian Bounty (GB).
